As you probably know OMGTea’s organic matcha green tea has 15x the nutritional value of normal green tea. It also contains 3x as much L-theanine as normal green tea. Why is this so important? And what in the world is L-theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid which promotes alpha brain wave production. It has a similar effect on the brain to that of meditation, you know, that relaxed but focused feeling you get. This is why the Buddhist monks have been drinking matcha for 800 years, it enhances meditation and yoga. You want some matcha now, don’t you!
Well, there’s more:
- You will notice a boost in your memory and focus (who doesn’t need that!)
- Several studies have shown that it may improve mood, by boosting serotonin and dopamine
Also, some studies have shown it reduces cognitive decline, so L-theanine can prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease
Why does matcha contain more L-theanine than normal green tea?
Matcha comes from the same green tea plant as normal green tea. However, before it’s harvested the plant is covered in 90% darkness, which encourages the plant to produce more chlorophyll to make up for the lack of sunlight. This, therefore, makes the leaves rich in amino acids, such as L-theanine, making the chlorophyll rise to the top and turning the leave a beautiful emerald green, like our matcha powder!
This is why we love it so matcha 💚
We know you love matcha as much as we do, but we wanted to tell you why we should ALL drink the emerald green elixir:
1. Improves Concentration, Memory & Focus
As we all know Zen Buddhist monks have been drinking matcha green tea for over 800 years, 800 years!! This is because it enhances meditation allowing them to relax their mind but remain energised. This is all down to L-theanine, a little amino acid contained in the emerald leaves. Now, for alert relaxation, you need L-theanine to boost alpha brain waves. Even better L-theanine increases the production of dopamine and serotonin, the chemicals which enhance mood, focus, concentration and memory!
Tip: Drink before a Yoga session for ultimate concentration
2. High in Antioxidants
You’ve heard about these, they are the ones who fight off all the bad stuff in your body, like viruses and diseases, detoxifying your body. These antioxidants are rich in polyphenols, most of which are catechins, EGCG is one of the most important of all, and guess what, matcha is super rich in EGCG!
Tip: matcha can have 200x the amount of EGCG as regular green tea.
3. Easy to Make
We cannot stress this enough!
You can use the lovely bamboo whisk, but really all you need is an electric whisk – which you already have – a teaspoon and a tea strainer or sieve!
1: Heat up some water to 80°C
2: Put 1tsp of OMGTea matcha green tea in a bowl
3: Pour a small amount of water and whisk into a paste, top it up with some more water and you’re done!
Tip: Add some Oat Milk and a drop of Vanilla essence for ultimate goodness
4. Aids Weightloss
Matcha is able to increase the body’s ability to burn fat. But don’t take our word for it, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ran a study which showed that green tea increases the rate at which your body burns calories. Useful right?
Tip: Another study found that matcha can increase your metabolism, so if you drink it before exercise, you can burn 25% more fat!

Matcha – the ultimate superfood
Green tea is a rich natural source of antioxidants. It’s said to be a superfood and is rich in polyphenols, most of which are catechins. Studies have shown catechins can protect the body against free radicals, slow the aging process and fighting viruses and diseases. EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is one of the most beneficial of these catechins and is found in abundance in Matcha. Scientists have now discovered EGCG to be at least 100 times more effective than Vitamin C and 25 times more effective than Vitamin E at protecting cells and DNA from free radical damage. Moreover recent studies show that Matcha can have 200 times the amount of EGCG as regular steeped green tea.
OMG Tea customers are reporting fantastic health benefits over and above a boost in energy. Matcha drinkers report feeling invigorated, also showing improvements in inflammatory pain relief, more youthful skin and hair and even a cure from a hangover! Not only is Matcha the most powerful antioxidant among teas, researchers have determined that gram for gram Matcha is the most powerful antioxidant known to occur naturally in nature.
ORAC measures the capability of antioxidants in food and beverages. Matcha scores up to 1,573 units.

Whether you’re in or out in the morning, the latest hot drink craze is Matcha green tea – the champagne of green tea’s that is unbelievably healthy but also acts as a clean energy boost and a soothing mind massage and all in one.
Matcha is the greenest green tea you will have ever seen and this is because it’s made from exceptionally high quality tea leaves which, as soon as they are picked, are steamed, freeze-dried and then stone ground into a very fine emerald green powder.
Just one cup has at least 10 times the overall goodness of regular green tea. In addition to this it has137 times the antioxidant level of EGCg, the cancer fighting catechin, than any other green tea.
Matcha is the new kid on the block and it is already making waves America and Canada and now it’s starting to take off in the UK.
It’s also really versatile, you can have it straight, with hot (not boiling) water or indulge in a Matcha latte which can be made with regular, soy, nut or even rice milk. If needs be you can sweeten with honey or maple syrup.
To make a simple OMGTEATM
- Add a small amount of water to ½ teaspoon of OMGTEATM a and mix, a bamboo whisk or an battery operated milk frother are best for this however if you don’t have one make a smooth paste with the teaspoon ensuring you have removed any lumps .
- Then add approximately 75ml of hot water but at no more than 80 degrees Celsius and mix again, the bamboo whisk or milk frother will give the Matcha vivid green foam on top.
This is Matcha in its most pure form so if it’s not a beautiful bright green, you have purchased an impure powder, or you have burned the Matcha with water that is too hot.
To make an OMGTEATM Latte
- Add a small amount of water to ½ teaspoon of OMGTEATM and mix, a bamboo whisk or an battery operated milk frother are best for this however if you don’t have one make a smooth paste with the teaspoon ensuring you have removed any lumps .
- Add steamed milk to create a creamy and hearty drink that Matcha lovers say is better than coffee.
OMGTEATM – The healthy high
It’s a well-known fact that green tea in all its forms is good for you and OMGTEA’s Matcha is like a highly condensed and purified version of green tea.
One of the major contributors to the benefits of Matcha is that the powder is consumed entirely unlike regular green tea where the leaves are steeped and then removed, taking some of the goodness with them.
The high comes from the fact that Matcha contains a compound called L-theanine which occurs naturally in green tea and is heralded as a mood booster which is also capable of improving cognitive performance whilst reducing mental and physical stress.
In simple terms it produces a longer lasting and smoother high and without the crashing come-down often associated to caffeine.
So if the promise of a 3-6 hour mood and performance boost isn’t enough, Matcha also fights free radicals, the root cause of ageing therefore slowing down the ageing process.

The question we all want to know the answer to: Can your children drink matcha?
Due to the amazing health benefits of Matcha green tea you might consider giving your children a small cup each morning.
Green tea is known to be rich in catechins which are disease-fighting nutrients that can protect you from heart disease and certain types of cancer; this is reported in many medical and scientific studies now and cited by the Harvard School of Public Health. EGCg the most powerful of these catechins is found most abundantly in Matcha green tea.
Below are listed some of the potential benefits for children who drink Matcha.
Children are at an increased risk of tooth decay, according to a 2012 study published in a well-known peer review journal *.The phytonutrient catechins in green tea, specifically epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCc), protect your child’s mouth against cavity-causing bacteria, while the sulphur components work on bad breath.
Keep Colds & Flu at Bay
The catechins in Matcha have antiviral properties that may protect your child from the flu. A study published in “The Journal of Nutrition” in 2011, explored the relationship between green tea consumption and the flu infection in a group of school children in Japan. The researchers found fewer cases of flu in children who drank one to five cups of green tea a day.
According to the American Heart Association the build-up of plaque in our arteries begins in childhood. Including Matcha tea into your child’s diet may help improve heart health.
Another Japanese study into obesity, published in 2008 found a decrease in cholesterol levels and blood pressure in a group of obese Japanese children who were given a catechin-rich drink.
You may have concerns about giving your child a drink that contains caffeine. An average cup ofMatcha contains 30 milligrams of caffeine whilst a regular coffee has 70-75milligrams. However, the caffeine in Matcha works with the L-Thenaine to give a slow release over 3 to 6 hours and as a result it is energising and calming at the same time, not at all like the caffeine effects experienced when drinking coffee. In addition it is worth noting that caffeine is commonly found in a number of foods that your child may already be consuming, including chocolate. Therefore the health benefits for children drinking Matcha in small amounts, maybe one cup a day first thing in the morning, far outweighs any negligible negatives.
