World Thinking Day, formerly ‘Thinking Day’, is celebrated annually on February 22 by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts since 1926. It’s also celebrated by Scout and Guide organisations and some boy-oriented associations around the world.
World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship, speaking out on issues that affect girls and young women, and fundraising. Here at OMGTea, we think it’s a good moment to tell you the story around our Matcha and spread the word about it.
In 2010 my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Watching my mother fight the disease made me realise that the most important thing in life is family, friends and health so I decided that I wanted to do something positive to help and became involved in supporting some ground breaking research which amongst other things highlighted the benefits of antioxidants in our diets. Green tea is renowned for its healing properties due to an abundance of antioxidants amongst other things.
“I wanted my mum to drink the green tea with the most antioxidants and so I tasked myself with the finding it. With it’s amazing health and healing properties an astonishing level of antioxidants Organic Matcha Green Tea was that tea. My mum and I started drinking it immediately.
I felt so passionate about its amazing health benefits and how it made us feel that I founded OMGTEA to help spread the word about this miracle green powder. Mum and I drink Matcha daily and have never looked back!”
OMGTEA Ltd Founder – Katherine Swift
Moreover, this year world thinking day’s theme is GROW and Matcha is very linked to this word. Because it is the way it is grown that makes Matcha what it is. Being grown shaded in bamboo during 4 weeks before it is harvested massively increases the production of Chlorophyll in the tea leaves.
At the end, consuming Matcha provides a long lasting energy boost and its ability to promote a state of relaxed awareness. This sense of well-being is why OMGTEA has become essential part of our customer’s daily routine – giving them a natural boost for hours, the perfect way to start the day.
We source OMGTEA from most respected and reputable matcha supplier in Japan who have won many awards for their high standards of organic matcha farming and production.
Our trip to Japan to visit our matcha farmers is a great way to find out more about our ethics and mission at OMGTea.
According to recent research drinking Matcha with citrus juice or vitamin C improves the health benefits of the tea. This is because citrus juice significantly boosts the bioavailability of Matcha’s antioxidants, known as catechins, meaning your body can absorb more of these compounds (as much as 13 times) which have been linked to lowered cancer risk as well as improved heart and brain health.
The study at Purdue University involved putting green tea alone and with various additives through a model that simulated gastric and small-intestinal digestion. The research found that catechins are unstable in non-acidic environments such as the intestines and less than 20 percent of the total remains after digestion. But adding vitamin C to your
OMGTEATM Matcha increased the levels of the two most abundant catechins by six fold and thirteen fold, epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG), and epicatechin-gallate (ECG), respectively.
Not only lemon but lime, orange and grapefruit were all shown to be effective and whilst adding 10% juice was helpful, the best catechin preservation happened at levels of 20 to 50 percent juice.
This suggests that while adding a squeeze of lemon to tea is an excellent idea, it also makes sense consider 20% to 50% blends using orange and grapefruit juices. For those purists out there have a citrus drink before your Matcha, that’s what we often do!

OMGTEA’s matcha comes from Kagoshima Prefecture and is the pride and joy of our tea farmers there. Kagoshima is famous for its lush vegetation, a volcanic tropical paradise that could easily become known as the ‘Hawaii of Japan’.
This warm, humid volcanic island boasts mineral and nutrient-rich soils which provides the best conditions for the tea to grow, and this shows itself in the taste and quality. These optimum conditions are why matcha has been successfully cultivated in Kagoshima for around 700 years.
There has been questions lately in the media about the potential harmful lead levels in matcha and the following information should help dispel this negative coverage for Japanese Matcha at the least.
“The key is to know the origin of your matcha”. Katherine OMGTEATM
With the growing popularity of matcha, Chinese tea producers have also started to cultivate and sell matcha and this is where the problem with lead content in matcha lies. Industrial and car exhaust pollution have a serious effect on the soil and air in China and it’s not even recommended to buy organic from there because the tea leaves absorb lead from everything in the environment.
Not too surprisingly the lead content in Chinese tea leaves has been found to be high and a study in 2006 found that 32% of the Chinese leaves sampled exceeded the safe upper limit of micrograms of lead per serving. The Japanese tea leaves did not have any tea leaves that exceeded the safe upper limit, most having little or non.
It’s also important to point out at this stage, that whilst it’s always good to be cautious scaremongering is commonplace in todays day and age and the vast majority of observational studies on large populations of tea drinkers (even those in China!!!) show the health related benefit of tea consumption i.e. the larger the intake, the greater the benefit, particularly in reducing the risk of age related diseases and that’s enough for me.
So forget the lead and get ahead with OMGTEATM – try some organic matcha here.
We were delighted to be exhibiting at the OM Yoga show in London last weekend. Having a presence at such a high profile and well attended Yoga show was important to OMGTEATM due to its amazing relevance for yoga and meditation practices.
Few people know that Matcha was introduced into Japanese culture over 800 years ago by the Zen Buddhist monks who used it to help their meditation and we love the fact that they still drink it for the same reasons to this day. Samurais also got a taste for it not long after, sipping it before battles for increased endurance and focus.
Both yoga and meditation can definitely help us to become more wakeful and mindful during the day and drinking a cup of Matcha before both really does “jumpstart” a session like nothing else. You will feel more at ease, less jittery and able to concentrate better not to mention more energised.
In no small part the explanation of Matcha’s role in this enhanced state of mind is the very high concentration of the amino acid called L-theanine, which has been shown to reduce physiological and psychological stresses. L-theanine also improves cognition and mood in a synergistic manner with caffeine and promotes alpha wave production in the brain. This is also pretty much what meditation does. We like to think of matcha as “liquid meditation.”
So remember to drink it before your next yoga or meditation session! We promise you won’t look back.

There is a lot more to OMGTEA’s Organic Matcha than just the lovely mild green tea taste and its vibrant emerald green colour.
It also has astonishing health and healing properties and we feel privileged to be one of the select few in the UK that import Japanese Matcha as we understand its true value.
One of the reasons the health benefits of Matcha exceed those of other premium green teas is because you consume the whole leaf and not just the brewed water. One serving of Matcha is the equivalent of 10 servings of green tea in terms of its nutritional value and antioxidant content.
Matcha green tea has a much higher concentration of antioxidants than orange juice or blueberries, two fruit sources which are recognised for having an abundance of antioxidants.
Matcha has antiviral and antibiotic properties which are said to help to prevent cold and flu viruses whilst also aiding digestion by killing harmful bacteria Matcha is Very High in Antioxidants
Antioxidants are the amazing nutrients and enzymes that are essential for fighting life threatening diseases; the negative effects of UV radiation which in turn gives us younger-looking skin and all other age related decline. They are something that the health-conscious seek from foods such as raw fruits, green veggies, not forgetting dark chocolate. ORAC measures the potency of antioxidants found in food and beverages. Matcha offers a stunning high level of ORAC units: With 1573 units it surpasses all natural antioxidant rich food known so far.
Eisai – the monk who brought tea to Japan said that it was “the elixir of the immortals. Wherever tea seeds are planted, long life is sure to follow”
