As you probably know OMGTea’s organic matcha green tea has 15x the nutritional value of normal green tea. It also contains 3x as much L-theanine as normal green tea. Why is this so important? And what in the world is L-theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid which promotes alpha brain wave production. It has a similar effect on the brain to that of meditation, you know, that relaxed but focused feeling you get. This is why the Buddhist monks have been drinking matcha for 800 years, it enhances meditation and yoga. You want some matcha now, don’t you!
Well, there’s more:
- You will notice a boost in your memory and focus (who doesn’t need that!)
- Several studies have shown that it may improve mood, by boosting serotonin and dopamine
Also, some studies have shown it reduces cognitive decline, so L-theanine can prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease
Why does matcha contain more L-theanine than normal green tea?
Matcha comes from the same green tea plant as normal green tea. However, before it’s harvested the plant is covered in 90% darkness, which encourages the plant to produce more chlorophyll to make up for the lack of sunlight. This, therefore, makes the leaves rich in amino acids, such as L-theanine, making the chlorophyll rise to the top and turning the leave a beautiful emerald green, like our matcha powder!
This is why we love it so matcha 💚
We know you love matcha as much as we do, but we wanted to tell you why we should ALL drink the emerald green elixir:
1. Improves Concentration, Memory & Focus
As we all know Zen Buddhist monks have been drinking matcha green tea for over 800 years, 800 years!! This is because it enhances meditation allowing them to relax their mind but remain energised. This is all down to L-theanine, a little amino acid contained in the emerald leaves. Now, for alert relaxation, you need L-theanine to boost alpha brain waves. Even better L-theanine increases the production of dopamine and serotonin, the chemicals which enhance mood, focus, concentration and memory!
Tip: Drink before a Yoga session for ultimate concentration
2. High in Antioxidants
You’ve heard about these, they are the ones who fight off all the bad stuff in your body, like viruses and diseases, detoxifying your body. These antioxidants are rich in polyphenols, most of which are catechins, EGCG is one of the most important of all, and guess what, matcha is super rich in EGCG!
Tip: matcha can have 200x the amount of EGCG as regular green tea.
3. Easy to Make
We cannot stress this enough!
You can use the lovely bamboo whisk, but really all you need is an electric whisk – which you already have – a teaspoon and a tea strainer or sieve!
1: Heat up some water to 80°C
2: Put 1tsp of OMGTea matcha green tea in a bowl
3: Pour a small amount of water and whisk into a paste, top it up with some more water and you’re done!
Tip: Add some Oat Milk and a drop of Vanilla essence for ultimate goodness
4. Aids Weightloss
Matcha is able to increase the body’s ability to burn fat. But don’t take our word for it, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ran a study which showed that green tea increases the rate at which your body burns calories. Useful right?
Tip: Another study found that matcha can increase your metabolism, so if you drink it before exercise, you can burn 25% more fat!

Turmeric and Matcha together? How many more wacky coffee cocktail concoctions can there be?! This blend may seem far fetched to some. But there are some of you out there who may already be aware of the recently raved-about benefits of turmeric. Turmeric is a superfood that we should all be including in our diets.
- A herbaceous plant from the ginger family
- A deep warm orange powder
- It was first used as ancient Chinese medicine and a dye
- Circumin is the active ingredient in Turmeric that has been found to contain high levels of antioxidants and be a very powerful anti-inflamatory. Anti-inflamation is essential to repairing cells in the body and warning of disease and bugs
- Turmeric is also very successful at reducing age related diseases- much like Matcha!
- A shade-grown, grounded, green tea leaf naturally very rich is antioxidants and amino acids
- When you drink matcha you are consuming the entire leaf; not an infusion!
- One cup of Matcha is equivalent to 10-15 times the nutrients of regular green tea
- Matcha naturally detoxifies and cleanses the body, boosts metabolism and has been proven to assist in fat oxidation
- Matcha naturally keeps you calm, alert and boosts your mood due to amino acid L-theanine
- Matcha has been shown to fight age related diseases such as heat disease, strokes, free radicals, and cancer

ENHANCING YOUR LIFE WITH MOVEMENT, YOGA
Early mornings, late nights, false starts, weekend bites, school runs, playtime funs, cold winter evenings, happy feelings, stretched to the limit, not feeling in it, quiet time, gin and lime – this life can be a pantomime. OMGTea is the extraordinary tea, for our extra-extraordinary lives. Our mission is to make sure everyone feels extraordinary every day, even if that means simply flicking the kettle on…
Use our unique hashtag #extraordinaryme for those moments where you feel mindful of just how extraordinary you are and to follow your own matcha mantra.
The less full-on mindfulness. Starting your mornings with a dose of organic Matcha not only has the potential to liven you up but truly gives you a release of energy that you can feel flow through your veins. The synergy between the chemicals L-theanine and caffeine resulting in a sustained energy burst that lasts over 4-6 hours without jitters, anxiety or crashes – similar to side effects associated with coffee. L-theanine is an #extraordinary chemical that helps boost alpha brain waves, those that are present in deep relaxation, meditation and concentration. Consequently, dopamine and serotonin levels are increased resulting in a heightened state of happiness and calm.
Here at OMGTea we have coined matcha our ‘Liquid Meditation’. As many of you may know, Matcha was introduced into Japanese culture by the Zen Buddhist Monks over 800 years ago. They used it to promote the production of the alpha brain waves for a more zen-like state of mind, a more focused way of meditating and a better yoga practice. Does OMGTea help you create your own matcha mantra?
Matcha living is organic living. At OMGTea we believe that life is precious, and we should, therefore, take the effort to be aware of our actions, their impact on the planet and how our carbon footprint affects the earth. We actively avoid the use of man-made plant fertilisers and nasty pesticides in our crop fields in Japan, all our leaves are hand picked, pruned and weeded. Our powdered matcha tea leaves are 100% organic.
Exercise. Uh- sigh. This word can unleash a world of panic in our minds sometimes. So for the purposes of getting us all up and moving, we’re re-naming it as ‘movement’. As humans, we move subconsciously, when we first wake up, on the way to work, even when we are sleeping. So why is it so hard to tackle prescribed movement? Exercise is amazing for releasing high levels of endorphins that make you want to shout from the mountain tops about how healthy you feel. However, it can be hard to get into the zone to START.
Once we have started the movements (our brain telling our body to bend knees, put remote down and get off the sofa, and our muscles obeying) it becomes much easier. The key to engaging in any form of ‘movement’ (he-who-shall-not-be-named) is to just stand up and begin. Within the first five minutes of exercising the endorphin will have already begun to kick in and any anxieties we had about starting will have dispersed and the worries about sliding off the treadmill will be too distracting anyway for you to even notice. So here at OMGTea we are making an effort to START MOVING, especially at times when it seems utterly impossible.
Before our gym sessions, yoga classes, tennis lessons, paddle boarding expeditions, and circuits groups we encourage you to try a cup of matcha. Matcha has been proven to increase sports performance, and no- you don’t have to be Jessica Ennis or Usain Bolt. We are all extraordinary throughout this journey of life, especially when we are making our bodies move like they are supposed to. One cup of matcha will give you a zing of energy that will last over your whole work out, it can also make you perform better! So your 1km run could transform into a 2km run. Last but not least, matcha is a fantastic powder to mix into protein shakes. Matcha has been shown to increase our metabolisms by 4 X the normal rate!
Did you know that 10% of our profits go directly towards funding groundbreaking research into age-related diseases? Founder of OMGTea, Katherine Swift set up ‘The Healthy Life Foundation‘ to aid the research into dementia, cancer, breast cancer, secondary breast cancer, heart disease and strokes. The mission of The Healthy Life Foundation is to support scientific and medical research targeted at preventing degenerative disease and extending both human health span and lifespan and thus improving quality of life nationally and globally. At the heart of all the work we do here at OMGTea is this mission linked to our ethos at The Healthy Life Foundation. Let’s start with a clean, green cup of Matcha.
Where do you get your energy from? Feeling energetic can be hard but we need to make sure it doesn’t become a chore. Having energy feels great, and enables you to accomplish so much more. Channelling that youthful exuberance will improve your work, your personal life, relationships, and will give you that optimal human experience. Try your very own matcha challenge, take a deep breath, notice the things around you that make you smile. Notice how you may become more thoughtful in the present moment and that giving yourself energy is easy.
Enjoy your life today,
Let’s feel extraordinary together,
All our love,
The OMGTea Team

Here at OMGTea we are really passionate about helping the environment in any way we can. We’re keen to encourage our customers to also do their bit to make a difference. We’ve compiled a list of 10 small things you can do to help the environment that may make a small impact on your life, but a big impact on the planet.
1 – Reuse your OMGTea tins
We package our matcha in beautiful 30g tins, which are perfect for reusing in your home. When you’ve finished your lovely Matcha from us (place another order 🙂 and then wash and dry the tin, to give it a whole new lease of life. They’re the perfect size for an individual portion of snacks, hairbands and hairclips, loose change and so much more!
2 – Ditch the clingfilm
Single use plastic is really detrimental to our environment, and it is so unnecessary when there are loads of eco friendly alteratives. Storing leftovers in reusable tubs that can be used time and time again eliminate the need for clingfilm. Use reusable food covers, even beeswax wraps are perfect for keeping food fresh, and will last so much longer than that roll of clingfilm.
3 – Take the bus
Or train, or tram, or your bike! Public transport is so much better for the environment, and it can often save you money too. Cycling and walking are a great way to get fit whilst also helping the environment, and even swapping just one car journey a week for a quick walk or cycle will make a difference. Look into your local public transport too, and see if you could be getting the bus, train or tram to work, you may even save some money on petrol and parking!
4 – Car share
If public transport isn’t an option for you, why not try and organise a car share? Often we are travelling in the same direction as friends or colleagues, and it isn’t always necessary! Chat to people and see if you could start sharing lifts, or check out apps and websites like BlaBlaCar to see if you could be sharing the driving with someone else. And who knows, you may end up being the ultimate car karaoke duo!
5 – Make a meal plan
We’re all guilty of occasionally overindulging on the supermarket shop, picking things up just because we see them, or they’re on a special offer, however buying things unnecessarily can be really bad for our planet. By writing a meal plan for each week you can reduce food waste. You can also plan to take leftovers to work for lunch, which will save you time and money!
6 – Reuse, reuse and reuse again
Picking up bottles of water and cups of tea and coffee when on the go is a modern day luxury, however we are just creating more waste which is difficult to process in an eco friendly way. Buying a BPA free water bottle that can be used time and time again will save you money in the long run, but also save you buying and disposing of more plastic. The same applies to hot drink cups, there are hundreds of reusable alternatives available, that are easy to clean, well-insulated and often very pretty, so why not invest in a reusable cup for all your hot drink needs? Some major coffee chains also offer a discount on your drink of choice when you bring along your own cup, so everyone wins!
7 – Buy it loose
Supermarkets are the worse for unnecessarily packaging fresh produce in far too much plastic, so why not make the environmentally friendly choice and buy the loose produce where possible? This way you get to choose which produce you’re taking home, and you’re also helping the environment. The same applies to buying meat and fish, often produce bought from the serviced counters will use less packaging, and you can also choose the exact cuts and amount you want, so you’ll have less waste!
8 – Grow it yourself
If you really want to avoid plastic packaging, why not try growing some of your own produce at home? Plants like basil, coriander, carrots, tomatoes, chillies and beans are all really easy to grow and don’t require loads of space, so why not make an afternoon of planting seeds and watching your things grow over the following weeks and months?
9 – Bring your own bags
Everyone knows that buying plastic bags at the supermarket is bad for the environment, hence why they started charging 5p for each bag. However we often forget to bring our own bags to the supermarket, and end up buying more every time we go. Try keeping these bags in the boot of your car, or at least keeping a small canvas tote in your regular bag so you always have something to put your purchases in!
10 – Buy it used
We don’t always need to buy everything new. When you’re thinking of making a new purchase, check the second hand sites such as eBay, Depop and Gumtree to see if you can pick up something at a cheaper price, but also at a lower cost for the planet. These websites often have really good deals and you can find whatever you need with ease.
And another tip – Wash at 30
Laundry generally doesn’t need to be washed at a really high heat, so choosing to wash at 30 will use less energy and therefore make your bill less. Unless things are really dirty or really need it, choose to dial down and opt to wash at 30.
So there we go, 10 really easy tips that will take little effort and time from you, but will make a big change to our environment if we all made that little bit more effort. Let us know how you get on, ecowarriors!
